Tying Heritage for the Future
World Ikat Textiles Symposium 2018 will be the 4th “ WITS Forum.” It will be held for 3 days at Rachawadee Resort and Hotel, Khon Kaen, Thailand, starting on December 4, 2018.
The first World Ikat Textiles Symposium — “Ties that Bind” was held in 2016 at SOAS, University of London. In the following year, 2017, WITS “Ties that Bind” were held twice. In September, held at the Bikaner House in New Delhi, India. And in December, held in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.
To foster cross-cultural exchange of Ikat through variety of activities and workshops, promote trade opportunities on the basis of local identity and sustainability, and develop connections between Ikat communities and the members of World Craft Council (WCC). We hope to ignite inspirations and pride from the unique and authentic local wisdom of Thailand.
The Symposium will be held on the topic of “Tying Heritage for the Future,” with 4 sessions throughout the 3-day programme. We are honoured by YM Raja Datin Paduka Fuziah b. Raja Tun Uda as the Symposium Facilitator. The Symposium will be arranged on the following subjects in each particular session.
SESSION I: IKAT HERITAGE – GLOBAL
SESSION II: IKAT HERITAGE – THAILAND
SESSION III: IKAT TEXTILES IN THE MARKET
SESSION IV: IKAT & CRAFTS EDUCATION
Exhibiting IKAT Textiles from over 20 countries across the world.
International Ikat Collections: curated by Mr, Edric Ong and Mrs, Manjari Nirula
Thai Ikat Collections: curated by Dr. Surapee Rojanavongse, Dr. Sitthichai Smanchat and
Mr. Meechai Taesuriya.
Throughout the event, delegates will be experiencing the uniqueness of Ikat weaving
process and traditional features from Thai women’s groups.
There will be a Hands-on Workshop held at Rachawadee Resort Hotel, on 4-6 December 2018 demonstrating the art of “Cold Dyeing” from Thai Herbs: Butterfly pea flowers, Pandanus leaves, Banana flowers, Bale, Golden Rain Tree, Lotus stems, Mulberry leaves, Lotus, and Ebony.
On the last day (Dec 6), another Workshop will be organised at Baan Hua Fai (บ้านหัวฝาย) on Mudmee Weaving and Paint-Yarn dyeing.
Day tours in Khon Kaen, 3 days-2 nights packaged tours as described in the C. Post Forum Field Trips to choose from.
